About Udawalawa

About Udawalawa Botanical Garden

Udawalawe National Park, established on June 30, 1972, spans 30,821 hectares across Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. Originally created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the Walawe River Development Scheme and to protect the Udawalawe Reservoir's watershed, the park now serves as a premier destination for adventure safaris. Visitors can observe a diverse array of wildlife, including approximately 250 Asian elephants, spotted deer, wild buffalo, and a variety of bird species. The park's open grasslands and teak plantations offer an ideal setting for wildlife enthusiasts seeking an immersive safari experience.

While there isn't a botanical garden within Udawalawe National Park, the park's rich flora includes tall plants such as satin, halmilla, ebony, and medicinal plants like nelli and bulu. The Walawe River is lined with kumbuk and mandora trees, and grasslands feature species like mana, iluk, pohon, and damaniya. These diverse plant species contribute to the park's unique ecosystem, supporting its abundant wildlife and offering visitors a chance to appreciate Sri Lanka's natural botanical diversity in a wild setting.

Discover the hidden wonders of Udawalawe's natural landscapes, where diverse flora, serene riverbanks, and thriving ecosystems create a perfect escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
